Zoom or F2F?

Most universities in HK announced all classes will be delivered ONLINE for the spring semester due to the 5th wave of pandemic.

Scrolling through Instagram, unsurprisingly many of my friends seem unhappy with the arrangement. (I guessed from the content they posted)

I wondered if most of you preferred online or offline lectures?

Before jumping into my preference, I think these are the major concerns for whether doing classes on- or off-line:

  1. You missed the opportunities to meet new people and have human interaction 👥
  2. You cannot access university facilities 🏊 🏸
  3. You feel like you wasted the tuition fee 💰….. and more but thats what I came up with right now

I preferred zoom classes, the feelings come even stronger after the last semester, when classes are offline

I have more freedom to use my time.

Most classes have class recordings, I can watch the recordings back in 1.5x if the classes dont require attendance (sorry professor 😅). It saves time as sometimes I just cant focus during class, and have to rewatch the videos afterward.

Now I only have to “attend” lessons on Wednesday and Friday, morning on Monday, other days are all my own. I can better manage my time to do other things, for example hiking ⛰ on Monday afternoon or Tuesday, and tutorial classes 📚 on Thursday. I can also catch up on the lecture videos at my own pace, which I learn much better this way.

I just love the freedom to arrange my tasks more freely!

Interacting with ppl every day is tiring.

Well, this certainly depends on people. I like to be surrounded by a small group of quality friends. I also don’t like meeting people every day, it drains my energy. I already met some good friends last semester, I prefer spending more time maintaining the relationship.

I also think meeting people doesnt only limit in school, you can make friends anywhere. I met a hiking buddy during a water sports course and some great friends on Instagram 😂

So the idea of going to school for human interaction didnt attract me that much.

It is kind of funny to my friends’ reaction. Many of them skipped classes during the last semester, so why are they bothered for not having online classes😂 It may be the human interaction, but school isn’t the only way to meet friends, right?

One thing I did miss is the university gym ☹️, but this really depends on government policies but not the school

I am writing this after chatting with my friends whining our school should announce zoom class earlier 😂 (which happened in early Feb, and I am inspired hahaha
